Biomass Partitioning Following Defoliation of Annual and Perennial Mediterranean Grasses Ecology and Society
Gutman, Mario; Agricultural Research Organization; mgutman@shani.net; Noy-Meir, Imanuel; Hebrew University of Jerusalem; noymeir@agri.huji.ac.il; Pluda, Daniel C; Volcani Center;; Seligman, No'am; Volcani Center; noamseli@netvision.net.il; Rothman, Steven; ;; Sternberg, Marcelo; Tel Aviv University; MarceloS@tauex.tau.ac.il.
A two-year experiment was conducted in northeastern Israel to study the effects of various defoliation regimes on biomass partitioning between vegetative and reproductive structures in a perennial and an annual Mediterranean grass. Greater insight into the mechanisms regulating biomass partitioning after defoliation enables ecologists and rangeland managers to interpret and predict population and community dynamics in Mediterranean grasslands more efficiently. Two typical Mediterranean grasses, Triticum dicoccoides, an annual species, and Hordeum bulbosum, a perennial species, were grown in containers in the open. They were subjected to a series of defoliation treatments that comprised three clipping frequencies and three clipping heights in a full...

Anatomical and morphological modifications in response to flooding by six Cerrado tree species Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Adilson Serafim de; Ferreira,Cristiane Silva; Graciano-Ribeiro,Dalva; Franco,Augusto César.
Wetlands are common in the Cerrado (Brazilian savannas) biome, however flooding of these wetlands impairs growth and development of most plants. We evaluated flood tolerance of typical Cerrado trees. Seedlings of Aspidosperma macrocarpon (Apocynaceae), Tabebuia rosea (Bignoniaceae), Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Bignoniaceae), Myracrodruon urundeuva (Anacardiaceae), Kielmeyera coriacea (Calophyllaceae) and Copaifera langsdorffii (Fabaceae) were flooded up to the stem base for 30 days. Stems with cortical cracks, secondary aerenchyma and hypertrophic lenticels were observed in flooded plants of M. urundeuva,H. chrysotrichus and T. rosea while adventitious roots were formed in flooded plants of T. rosea and H. chrysotrichus. However, only T. rosea developed...

Growth, photosynthesis and leaf water potential in young plants of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) under contrasting irradiances Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ronquim,Carlos Cesar; Prado,Carlos Henrique B. A.; Souza,João Paulo de.
Growth and leaf nutrient content were compared in young potted plants of Copaifera langsdorffii in sunny and shaded areas without water stress. Besides, carbon assimilation and leaf water relations were evaluated by net photosynthesis, potential photochemical efficiency and leaf water potential during daily courses in dry and rainy periods under natural conditions in both contrasting irradiances. Higher values of total biomass, height and leaf area occurred in sunny than in shaded area. On the other hand, all young plants survived in shade under natural water stress probably by reason of fast and intense biomass accumulation in favor of roots in early development. There was no significant difference about nutrient concentration in leaves between plants...

Germination, initial growth, and biomass allocation in three native Cerrado species Rev. Bras. Bot.
Saboya,Pablo; Borghetti,Fabian.
The parameters of germination, initial growth, and biomass allocation of three native plant species of Cerrado (Copaifera langsdorffii, Dipteryx alata and Kielmeyera coriacea) were established. The species had germination percentages above 88% and average germination times longer than 139 hours. The average time for the opening of the first leaf pair was more than 538 hours for all three species. The average root length of C. langsdorffii and D. alata seedlings after 80 days of growth was around 40cm, four times larger than the average shoot length (<10cm), although the root and shoot biomasses were similar for both species. The average root length (>20cm) of K. coriacea seedlings was four times larger than the average shoot length (<5cm), and...

Nitrogen fertilization on the establishment of Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte R. Bras. Zootec.
Sales,Rita Manuele Porto; Fries,Daniela Deitos; Pires,Aureliano José Vieira; Bonomo,Paulo; Santana,Sérgio Adorno de; Santos,Iasminy Silva; Rocha,Aline Viana; Sobral,Daiane Maria Pinto Ladeia.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the establishment of forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte) propagated vegetatively. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design with treatments arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial design - two ages (70 and 85 days after planting) and four nitrogen doses (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha) - with four replications. Morphogenetic and structural characteristics and production were evaluated. The nitrogen accelerated the establishment of the forage peanut with an increase in dry weight of green leaves and stolons. The greatest length of stolons (48.0 cm) was obtained with a dose equivalent to 86 kg N/ha and higher density of stolons (20 stolons/vase) between 78 and...

Plant growth, radiation use efficiency and yield of sugarcane cultivated in agroforestry systems: An alternative for threatened ecosystems Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHWERZ,FELIPE; MEDEIROS,SANDRO L.P.; ELLI,ELVIS F.; ELOY,ELDER; SGARBOSSA,JAQUELINE; CARON,BRAULIO O..
Abstract Sugarcane (Sacharum officinarum L.) monocropping has had a great socio-economic and environmental impact in Brazil, and agroforestry systems have been considered as an alternative for more sustainable production; however, there is a lack of field research under such conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth rates, radiation use efficiency and yield traits in sugarcane cultivated in the understory of Aleurites fordii, in two agroforestry arrangements and monocropping systems. A field experiment was conducted from July 2015 to June 2016 in the city of Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The radiation use efficiency, assimilate partitioning, leaf area index, absolute growth rate, net assimilation rate, number of...

Defoliation and S nutrition on radish: growth, polyphenols and antiradical activity Horticultura Brasileira
Stagnari,Fabio; Galieni,Angelica; D’Egidio,Sara; Pagnani,Giancarlo; Ficcadenti,Nadia; Pisante,Michele.
ABSTRACT Experiments were carried out to study patterns of artificial defoliation in radish in combination with sulphur (S) fertilization, to evaluate the contribution of younger and older leaves on plant growth and phenolics accumulation in storage roots. Biomass accumulation and partitioning were related to leaf age, magnitude and timing of the clipping treatments. Older leaves increased biomass production and translocation into the storage organ; besides, they induced higher accumulation of phenolic compounds compared to the younger leaves. The highest S fertilization rate (120 kg ha-1) significantly enhanced the polyphenols accumulation, as well as the antiradical activity. The modulation of S inputs in combination with slightly induced stress from...

ALLELOPATHIC EFFECT OF LEGUMINOUS WEEDS ON RATE, SYNCHRONIZATION AND TIME OF GERMINATION, AND BIOMASS PARTITIONING IN RICE Planta Daninha
ZOHAIB,A.; ANJUM,S.A.; JABBAR,A.; TABASSUM,T.; ABBAS,T.; NAZIR,U..
ABSTRACT The present study was aimed at determining the allelopathic influence of water extracts at varying concentrations (2.5% and 5% w/v) and residues with varying decomposition periods (0, 15 and 30 days) at 2% (w/w) concentration of four weeds (Trigonella polycerata, Vicia sativa, Lathyrus aphaca, Medicago polymorpha) against rate, synchronization and time of germination, and biomass partitioning of rice through plant and soil bioassays. Germination and biomass partitioning in rice plants were inhibited by extracts and residues. The maximum decrease in energy of germination (88.6%) and increase in time for 50% germination (210.4%) were caused by the L. aphaca extract at 5% concentration as compared to control. Root and shoot, fresh weight (13.6 and...
